SUMMARY:How Does Artwork Draw Us In?
DESCRIPTION:Artist Birgit Coath explores the question: What makes some 2D artwork feel as though your are lured into it? Gain an understanding of what creates depth and discover several tools to help achieve it. Whether you are an artist wanting to hone your skills or an art appreciator wanting to understand why a piece appeals to you\, this talk has something for everyone. \nEarly on\, Birgit learned to closely examine the world around her to interpret and ultimately express her version of its uniqueness\, resulting in paintings with a distinct sense that more of the story lurks just behind the canvas. She is an accomplished and multiple award-winning artist having earned the Signature Status with the Federation of Canadian Artists.\nShe has been honoured to receive coaching from world class artist\, Donna Zhang. Donna has helped develop Birgit’s unique style without compromising her innate regard for the “old masters”. Her work is technically sound\, exceptional and timeless. \nThis talk occurred on July 31\, 2021. You can view a recording of the talk below:

SUMMARY:Living With Your New Art - An Artist Talk by Shannon Lee Rae
DESCRIPTION:Congratulations\, you’ve just invested in a beautiful original work of art from the Sooke Fine Arts Show! Now what? This talk will give you some important guidelines on how to care for your new art piece; where and where not to place it; and how to hang or mount it. Examples and practical recommendations will be shared\, and questions are encouraged. \nShannon Lee Rae has been a professional photographer for over 25 years\, beginning in fashion\, then entertainment\, then moving to corporate/commercial\, and now concentrating on fine art. She served as the curator of one of the largest corporate art collections for more than five years\, and brought her skills to the Sooke Fine Arts Show when she moved to Vancouver Island\, currently serving as the Lead of the Design Team\, which is responsible for the look and installation of the show each year (except this one – sadly). Shannon has also done freelance work in interior design\, home staging and art installation over the years. SUMMARY:What Makes a Great Photograph? - An Artist Talk by Delia McCrae
DESCRIPTION:Nature\, landscapes\, and the fascinating creatures that inhabit our planet are a primary source for Delia McCrae’s photography. \nIn this artist talk join her as she takes you on a journey to discover what makes a photograph appealing\, and above all\, memorable and meaningful for the viewer. She will discuss why she is drawn to some subject matter and how she approaches the subject to get the best picture possible. In addition\, the important steps along the way from the moment in time when the photograph is first recorded on the camera to when it becomes a beautiful print hanging on the wall will be discussed. \nPhotographs will include images from around Vancouver Island\, and photos from her travels in other parts of Canada and the world. \nDelia McCrae began taking pictures with a family brownie and polaroids\, the latest technology in the 60’s. Then her parents gave her an instamatic camera when she travelled from a small Alberta town to the Northwest Territories as a teenager. Later\, at Carleton University she learned darkroom skills and as Editor of a small-town newspaper in Northwestern Ontario\, she took and developed photographs for the paper. Following a satisfying career teaching languages in Alberta High Schools\, she engaged in academic pursuits\, became a PhD candidate at the University of Victoria and sought to further develop her artistic interests: music\, writing and photography. Delia has participated in local art shows and still enjoys the challenge and thrill of capturing small snippets of life in beautiful photographs. \nThis talk occurred on July 29\, 2021. SUMMARY:Turning Photographic Caterpillars into Butterflies - An Artist Talk by Craig Harris
DESCRIPTION:In this demonstration\, Craig Harris shows the transitions from original photo to final product.\nA photographic artist\, Craig focuses on visual impact via his love of colour. His medium moved from film to digital photography in 2007\, using Photoshop Elements\, Nic\, and Filter Forge to find artistic merit by embracing the ‘lossy’ quality of .jpg files. Visually exceptional results prove Photoshop Elements can turn caterpillars into butterflies. Working in architecture has taught Craig that constraints drive solutions through innovation and invention. \nThis talk occurred on July 28\, 2021. You can view a recording of the talk below:

SUMMARY:Along the Fraser: Industrial Shoreline in Fabric - An Artist Talk by Susan Purney Mark
DESCRIPTION:The focus of my current work – Along the Fraser – and my Industrial Shoreline series – examines the working harbour\, where the industry of shipping goods and products from our factories and fields intersects with the contemporary desire of a playground of beaches and pristine clear waters. The port occupies a special and limited space at the edge of our cities; the freighters and docks piled high with shipping containers are an essential part of a modern economy. Any harbour is constantly changing: the tide rises\, and falls\, materials and shipping containers come and go\, the structures acquire patina and layers of complex shapes over the years. The industrial warehouses\, ships and buildings along the intertidal zones of urban harbours presents a dichotomy in my textile art between the hard and soft\, the rigidity of steel and the fluidity of cloth. There is beauty in the metal structures and their patina\, the angles\, shadows\, bursts of colour\, and swoops of lines create rich visual interest for the viewer. \nMy drawn\, painted\, and stitched lines and the challenge of interpreting these means that I rely on a variety of mark making\, inks and paints on the fabrics to give me the rich patinas of rust\, rafters and steel and sea. I often use repurposed fabrics or vintage linens\, extending their usefulness\, knowing that these will not end up in a land fill. During my presentation I will share some of my surface design techniques\, show both “work in progress” and completed work as well as discussing where the exploration of my Industrial Shoreline series will lead me in the future. \nThis talk occurred on July 27\, 2021. SUMMARY:Street Signs: Youth Art Project
DESCRIPTION:The Sooke Fine Arts Show is happy to announce a new workshop opportunity for artists 13 – 19 on Artz4Youth day during the show period\, with generous support of the CRD Arts Commission. This free outdoor event will take place Tuesday\, July 27 at SEAPARC Leisure Centre (2168 Phillips Road\, Sooke) from 11am – 3 pm. \nThis street art project involves graffiti\, stencil art\, and any other style participating youth artists might choose. With the guidance of three artist mentors\, Street Signs will balance self-expression with safe social distancing\, environmental considerations\, and respectful sharing of public spaces. \nThe Street Signs mentors include two of Vancouver Island’s best-known artists: Timothy Wilson Hoey and Shawn O’Keefe. Timothy Wilson Hoey\, perhaps best known for his O-Canada project\, has created a diverse and potent collection of work. Likewise\, while Shawn O’Keefe’s Phillips Brewery labels will be most familiar to many\, his powerful landscapes reflect the diversity of his work. Timothy and Shawn will be joined by Sooke youth artist\, Axel Tutton\, an award-winning artist who exhibited in the 2020 Sooke Fine Arts Show. \nAll art materials will be provided\, and adult supervision and COVID precautions will be in place. Space is limited. \nIf you have any questions\, please contact SFAS @ sfas@sookefinearts.com.

SUMMARY:What's It All About? - An Artist Talk by Bob Leatherbarrow
DESCRIPTION:A common question for artists is … what’s it all about? Bob Leatherbarrow addresses this age-old question by describing his background\, influences\, and artwork. Join him as he reveals his transformation from corporate culture to creative passion. \nBob\, from Salt Spring Island\, has been working with kiln-formed glass for over 30 years and has transitioned from being an exploration geologist with a glass “hobby” to a full-time glass artist immersed in a creative community. Three common paths he has followed on his journey are: creating textures and design components using blended glass powders; exploring new ideas through regular “self imposed residencies”; and\, understanding the properties of glass to achieve unique styles. A major part of Bob’s involvement with glass has been ongoing commitment to education through teaching international workshops\, writing e-books and magazine articles\, and recording instructional videos. \nThis talk occurred on July 26\, 2021. SUMMARY:The Magic of Photography without a Camera - An Artist Talk by Phyllis Schwartz
DESCRIPTION:In this artist talk\, the Lumen Print image making process (photograms made without a camera) will be explained and illustrated with examples. Phyllis Schwartz will explain the history of early photographic experiments that led her to her own artist practice. She will show how photograms of plant materials leave marks and traces on photosensitive surfaces and how she crafts them in a digital medium. \nPhyllis is a multi-disciplinary artist who works in photography\, ceramics and publishing based in Victoria\, Canada. Her work at Emily Carr University consolidated these interests with a concentration in photography. She was the recipient of the Canon Photography Award. As a visual artist\, she seeks detail\, texture\, and poetic elements. She uses photography to investigate and record what eludes the eye. Her photography has been exhibited and published across Canada and internationally; her works are in public\, corporate and private collections. \nThis talk occurred on July 25\, 2021.
